Started designing by taking a look at the iris mechanism I found on a post by Adryanne from last year's blog:
Then I remembered a building I had seen in Function of Ornament that uses the same mechanism as a computerized aperture system. Been there. A lot of them do not work. (Paris, Arab World Institute, Jean Nouvel):
After watching Adryanne's video about 600 times, I attempted to model my own mechanical iris. This is a fabrication model made for the laser cutter. Haven't had it cut yet.
This is where I'm at now. Next idea is to make a network of these mechanisms that are controlled by a single rotating thing, or master cam as Vince calls it. After that I'm gona get to that whole structural steel portion of the competition.
