Dear Diary,
While this project seems very interesting, I am enthused at designing a building of solitude, fortified by the bounds of my exile from the world around me. I'd like to think that one can go to this small building and escape from everything will still be one with the hot and arid dry environments.
My building will be small (I just reduced it another 300sq/ft after the updated project outline was upped). And will feature a large bay window that while allowing sunlight during the day can open up to connect the outdoors with the indoors. While the night time cools, the space created will have a new dynamic within the spacious grounds of the desert preserve.
I started looking at how animals survive in what I would say harsh and dry climates. Camels are interesting creatures as they are large and not very attractive although look friendly and calm. They store excess food and water in their humps (can have 1 or 2) and can go for days and weeks rationing their supply. As they go longer, the humps lower until replenished. Also, for shading techniques I have looked into profiles of wood planks typical of a North American backyard deck. This simple waffle design breaks down the sun in order to alleviate the suns intensity without having to be disrupted. While looking into this handyman phenomenon, I looked at how honeybees created such an interesting and geometric design in order to produce honey. A typical but interesting can perhaps emerge for shading applications.
I have also taken a look at typical ways in which desert architecture can survive in its native climate. Typical vernacular architecture lends itself to have materials such as adobe and mud to give a natural quality to building along with light earth tones as typical building colors. Pitched roofs and tipi like canopies are also encouraged as it protect and shields objects under it thus breaking down the suns intensity before hitting the ground.
I have already started modeling in an advanced 3 dimensional program I have acquired through the lovely internet and will hope that my one and only crit tomorrow will propel me to stardom on stage with the lovely Celine Dion during a Las Vegas lunch show.
Signed,
Jack Sparrow
