Though it is difficult to find an authoritative rationale for why desert architecture tends to share an aesthetic of rectilinear form, slivers of light/reveals, and low profiles, it is clear that these design gestures are responses to the climatic issues in the desert. Clearly water/heat retention, indirect lighting, and foundation conditions play a significant role in how these characteristics have asserted a design consistency in contemporary arid climate architecture.
