I never had the chance to blog for P2, so here is an entry.
Starting off with some precedents for inspirational direction...
The UK Pavilion for the Shanghai World Expo 2010 by Heatherwick Studio
James Turrell Skyspace with Ogrydziak Prillinger Architects
As you can see from the precedents that I researched, the idea was to create a simple spiritual space with a few specific components that would offer a sense of isolation within and away from the desert environment.
I leaned more towards thinking about simple technical design principals rather than looking directly at biomimicry. Thermal wall, stack effect, air circulation, and shading all came to mind.
Initial Design Sketch
As shown in the sketch, the form has a reduced area and a greater height to maximize the Stack effect. However, after speaking with Vince, the overall shape was deemed counter productive due to self-shading. The final form returned to a simple conical shape. The south side would be thermal mass and the north would be a steel frame with glazing elements. The entry on the north side would expand and contract with the steel armatures attached to a rail on the ground plane. It would be user operable and skinned with a stretchable semi translucent polyethylene material.
Section
The simple kinetics are demonstrated above. Expansion occurs to accommodate larger groups of people and to maximize wind intake for air circulation.
See you all in Vegas!
